  • Multi-code capture: drag a selection around several QR codes or barcodes and every one is decoded in a single capture. Results are copied one code per line, in reading order, ready to paste into Excel or any spreadsheet. Hold Shift while capturing to save them as a CSV file instead. See the help article for how it works.
  • QR codes and barcodes now appear in your recent captures, with a preview of the decoded text and one-click re-copy.

Stability & responsiveness

  • Fixed an issue where the tray icon could disappear if you launched UnicornOCR again while it was already running.
  • Captures stay responsive after your PC has been idle for a long time or has woken from sleep.
  • The app keeps running smoothly when Windows refreshes the taskbar or File Explorer.
  • Smoothed out brief pauses when opening the tray menu or showing a notification just after your PC wakes from sleep.
  • Made notification sounds more dependable, including after switching audio devices or waking from sleep.

Barcodes & QR codes

  • Sheets of identical barcodes now decode correctly, with each label counted once.
  • Small or blurry on-screen barcodes decode much more reliably.
  • When some codes in a capture can't be read, the notification now reports how many were copied and how many couldn't be read.
  • The free version now decodes one code per capture. Selecting multiple codes shows a prompt instead of a partial result.
  • More reliable copying for certain barcodes and numbers.
  • Scanned barcodes now paste cleanly into other apps.

Hotkeys

  • Setting a new shortcut no longer starts a capture by accident.
  • You can now reassign or swap your own shortcuts without being told they're already in use.
  • The "already in use" message now displays clearly within the window.

Captures & clipboard

  • Window captures now come out clean. The quick flash that confirms a capture could sneak into the picture as a faint tint; it now waits until your capture is safely taken.
  • Capturing a window that's tucked partly behind another one now gives you just that window, not whatever was sitting on top of it.
  • Added a clear message in the rare event a capture can't be completed.
  • Copies are more reliable, with an automatic retry if another app is briefly using the clipboard.

Recent captures (Pro)

  • Re-copying a past capture now retries if another app is briefly using the clipboard, so copies are more reliable.
  • The recent captures menu now always shows the correct preview right after a new capture.
  • The tray menu now handles quick, repeated clicks smoothly.

Dialogs & windows

  • The Help, Feedback, Legal, and other windows now work smoothly when several are open at once.
  • Smoothed out a rare visual glitch when opening app windows.

Under the hood

  • Updated the OCR engine to Tesseract 5.5 (up from 5.3.3). Text recognition is unchanged for the vast majority of captures, but you may notice small differences in the results for some images.
  • Lots of behind-the-scenes reliability improvements to keep the app running smoothly.

In Development

  • Text-to-Speech

    Have recognized text read aloud using your system’s voice engine. Useful for accessibility, multitasking, or reviewing text hands-free.

  • Additional Image Formats

    Currently images saved with the pro version are saved in .png format. We are working on adding options for .jpg, .bmp, and other common formats.

  • Improved Fullscreen Region Selection

    We're working to support region-based overlays even in fullscreen applications, matching the experience of standard windowed capture.

  • Customizable Number of History Items (Pro)

    We're looking into adding the ability to configure how many recent captures are retained in your history, giving you more control over your workflow.

Exploring / Considering

  • Automatic Language and Text Type Detection

    Support for additional languages is planned, including auto-detection of source language and support for additional character and text types.

  • Translation Support

    We are looking into adding features that may allow you to translate the text captured through OCR into your system's default language or a selected language of your choice. We are evaluating options for supporting fully offline translation for maximum privacy.

  • Tesseract Customization

    A possible advanced version of UnicornOCR will offer a user interface for configuring Tesseract's numerous OCR options, enabling better performance for specific layouts, use cases, or input types.

  • Deep Learning Enhancements

    Experimentation is ongoing in using machine learning rather than traditional OCR methods to improve performance with unusual, or visually complex text. While possible, it is challenging to do while keeping UnicornOCR fully offline and performant.

  • Rich Text and Table Formatting

    Preserve rich text and table formatting when copying text with OCR, maintaining structure and layout from the original content.

  • LaTeX Parsing

    Support for parsing and recognizing LaTeX mathematical notation. This is technically doable but adds significant size to the application. We are exploring the best way to include it as an optional package.
